How to get a Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) in India

A Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) is your legal electronic signature, needed for company filings, GST, income tax, e-tenders and GeM. Here is how to get one.

Step 1: Know what you need it for

Directors need a DSC for MCA filings; businesses use it for GST, ITR, e-tenders and GeM. Most need a Class 3 DSC, which is the current standard.

Step 2: Choose a certifying authority

DSCs are issued by licensed certifying authorities (eMudhra, Sify, NSDL and others). Pick one and select a one or two-year validity.

Step 3: Submit documents and verify

Provide PAN, address proof and a photo. Identity is verified via video or Aadhaar-based eKYC.

Step 4: Receive the token

The DSC is issued on a secure USB token (or downloaded, depending on type). Keep the token safe; it is your signature.

Step 5: Use it and renew before expiry

Install the driver and use it to sign filings. Renew before the one or two-year validity ends so your filings never stall.
