How to get an Import Export Code (IEC) in India
An Import Export Code (IEC) is a one-time registration you need to import into or export out of India. It is issued by DGFT and does not expire. Here is how to get it.
Step 1: Check when you need it
You need an IEC to clear customs for imports, to send commercial exports, and to receive or send foreign payments for trade. It is not needed for personal use.
Step 2: Keep documents ready
PAN, a current bank account with a cancelled cheque, business address proof, and digital photos. The business PAN becomes the basis of the IEC.
Step 3: Apply on the DGFT portal
Register on the DGFT website, fill the IEC application, upload documents and pay the fee. The process is fully online.
Step 4: Receive your IEC
The IEC is usually issued quickly, often within a couple of days. It is a 10-digit code linked to your PAN.
Step 5: Update it yearly
IEC does not expire, but DGFT requires you to confirm or update the details once a year to keep it active.
