How to verify a GST number (GSTIN) online in 30 seconds
Before you extend credit to a new customer or pay a new supplier, verify their GSTIN. A 30-second check tells you whether the number is real, active, and belongs to who they say.
Step 1: Get the 15-digit GSTIN
Ask the party for their GSTIN, or read it off their invoice. A valid GSTIN is 15 characters: 2-digit state code, 10-character PAN, and 3 check characters.
Step 2: Check the format first
The pattern is 2 digits, 5 letters, 4 digits, 1 letter, 1 letter/digit, Z, 1 letter/digit. If it does not match, it is fake before you even look it up.
Step 3: Look it up on the GST portal
Use the official 'Search Taxpayer' tool on the GST portal (or a trusted GSTIN lookup). Enter the number to see the registered legal name, trade name, status and registration date.
Step 4: Confirm status is Active
The status must show Active. Cancelled or suspended means you cannot claim input tax credit on their invoices, so treat with caution.
Step 5: Match the name and state
The registered name should match who you are dealing with, and the first two digits (state code) should match their stated location. Mismatches are a red flag.
Step 6: Save it against the contact
Store the verified GSTIN on the customer or supplier record so every future invoice carries the right number and your GST returns reconcile cleanly.
Frequently asked questions
Is GST number verification free?
Yes. Verifying a GSTIN on the official GST portal is free and takes seconds. You do not need to log in to do a basic search.
Why should I verify a GSTIN?
A fake or cancelled GSTIN means you cannot claim input tax credit, and it signals a party you should not extend credit to. Verifying protects your money and your tax position.
What does the state code in a GSTIN mean?
The first two digits are the state code where the business is registered (for example 27 is Maharashtra, 29 is Karnataka). It should match where the business actually operates.
