Deal Stage: Definition, Meaning & Guide for Indian Businesses
A deal stage is one step in the sales pipeline — Lead, Qualified, Proposal, Negotiation, Won, Lost — each with an expected probability of closing.
What is Deal Stage?
Every deal in your pipeline sits in one stage at a time. Each stage has a probability (Lead 5%, Qualified 20%, Proposal 40%, Negotiation 70%, Won 100%, Lost 0%). Multiply deal value × stage probability and you get the weighted forecast. The salesperson advances a deal stage only when a specific gate is cleared: budget confirmed for Qualified, written quote sent for Proposal, terms acceptance for Won. Without gates, salespeople inflate stages to look productive and forecasts become fiction. Most CRMs let you customise stages per pipeline so you can have one set for new business and another for renewals.
