Udyam Registration: Complete Step-by-Step Guide (2026)

If you run a shop, a workshop, a service firm or a trading business in India, Udyam registration is one of the most valuable and least expensive things you can do for it. It is the official way to register your business as a Micro, Small or Medium Enterprise, known as an MSME. The certificate is free, it is issued by the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, and it opens the door to cheaper loans, government tenders, subsidies and legal protection against buyers who pay you late. This guide walks you through what Udyam registration is, why it matters, who qualifies, what documents you need, and the exact steps to complete it on the official portal.

What is Udyam registration?

Udyam registration is a permanent identity number issued to a business that qualifies as an MSME. When you register, the portal gives you a Udyam Registration Number, often shortened to URN, and an e certificate you can download and print. The system is fully online and paperless, and it is built around your Aadhaar and PAN. Instead of asking you to upload piles of documents, the portal talks directly to the income tax and GST databases to confirm your figures. That makes the process quick and hard to fake, and it means your registration stays accurate as your business grows.

The registration is free and lifelong. You do not pay a fee, you do not renew it every year, and you do not need an agent to do it for you. Many private websites charge a fee and dress themselves up to look official, so remember the single genuine address is udyamregistration.gov.in and nothing else.

Who qualifies: the micro, small and medium limits

The government sorts businesses into three categories based on two numbers: how much you have invested in plant, machinery or equipment, and your annual turnover. A business must stay within both limits of a category to belong to it. The classification is the same for manufacturing and for service businesses, and traders are now included too. Here are the current thresholds.

Read the table as an AND rule, not an OR rule. A firm is Micro only if its investment is up to ₹1 crore and its turnover is up to ₹5 crore. If either number crosses the limit, the business moves up to the next category. Turnover from exports is not counted when working out your category, which helps exporting firms stay in a smaller, more beneficial bracket.

Why register: the real benefits

The Udyam certificate is not just a formality. It gives your business access to a long list of advantages that are otherwise hard to claim.

Documents you need before you start

One of the good things about Udyam is how little paperwork it demands. Because the portal verifies your data against government systems, you mostly need to have a few numbers ready rather than scanned files. Keep these at hand:

If you have not yet obtained your GST number, our guide on how to get a GST number walks you through that first, and if the term itself is new to you, read what GST means.

Udyam versus the old Udyog Aadhaar

Before 1 July 2020, MSMEs registered through a system called the Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum. Udyam replaced it entirely. The old system relied on figures you typed yourself, which were easy to get wrong or inflate. Udyam instead links to your PAN, GST and income tax records and works out your category from that verified data. Anyone who still held an old Udyog Aadhaar was required to migrate by registering fresh on the Udyam portal, otherwise their MSME status would lapse. If you registered years ago and are unsure whether you are on the new system, log in and check, because only a live Udyam certificate lets you claim the benefits above.

After you register

Once you hold a Udyam number, put it to work. Add it to your letterhead, your GST invoices and your quotations so buyers can see you qualify for the 45 day payment rule. Take the certificate to your bank when you next need working capital, and register on the government e marketplace to bid for tenders reserved for small firms. The registration itself is quick, but the value comes from actually using it in your daily business. IndiaCRM can carry your Udyam and GST numbers automatically onto every document you send, so you never have to type them again.
